Corbin High School will be receiving a Golden Football from the National Football League in honor of Corbin High School Graduate and former Oakland Raiders player Rodger Bird.
Bird will present the Golden Football to Corbin High School on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 between the boys and girls basketball games at approximately 7:15p.m. Corbin High School will also host a Golden Football Celebration at Corbin High School 11:00 - 11:25a.m. All community members are invited to attend both events.
A Golden Football will be presented to high schools for each player or head coach who graduated from the high school and was on an active Super Bowl roster. Rodger Bird played for the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl II in 1968. Bird played professional football for multiple years, he was a first round draft pick in 1965 and named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Bird also played for the University of Kentucky. He was a first team All-American, two time All-SEC, and named a SEC Legend. Bird was a two time All-State player at Corbin High School and led the 1960 Redhounds to an undefeated season.
The Golden Footballs are part of the NFL nationwide Super Bowl 50 Celebration and the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll Program. The program honors schools and communities that have influenced Super Bowl history. The NFL will present 2,000 high schools and approximately 3,000 players nationwide with Golden Footballs.
Bird and Mayor McBurney will speak to Corbin High School students and community members at the 11:00a.m. celebration Tuesday. Following the assembly culinary students will provide a special lunch for Bird, school staff, and Redhound Varsity Club members. Bird is also planning to meet with small groups of Corbin High School student athletes that afternoon. The presentation of the Golden Football will be held at the basketball game that night. All Corbin High School students may attend the January 19th basketball game free of charge.
The city of Corbin along with Corbin High School are working together to plan the event. The city is declaring the week of January 19 as Rodger Bird Week.
