The Corbin Independent School District will continue to be recognized as a Distinguished District. According to the testing data released by the Kentucky Department of Education this week the districts test scores increased by 1.9 overall.
A Distinguished District is classified as any district scoring between the 90th and 99th percentile in the state. Distinguished Districts are also recognized as the top 10 percent of school districts in Kentucky.
Corbin High School and Corbin Intermediate School were each named a “School of Distinction”, which is the highest award an individual school can achieve. Schools of Distinction are classified as the highest performing schools in the state with overall scores at the 95th percentile or higher.
“It is an honor to be recognized with the Kentucky Department of Education’s highest level as a ‘School of Distinction.’” Corbin Intermediate Principal Bill Jones commented. “It is especially gratifying, knowing that we stress a hands-on approach with our students through our emphasis on Project Based Learning. A balanced approach to state testing is important to us. We all believe that we are a ‘School of Distinction’ year-in and year-out because of the quality teaching and focused instruction provided to students every day at Corbin Intermediate School.”
In addition to being named a School of Distinction, Corbin High School also ranked as a top school in the College and Career Readiness category. This is the second year in a row the high school has achieved a top spot.
“Obviously, we are thrilled with our test scores,” Corbin High School Principal John Crawford said. “With the hard work of our assistant principals, counselors and teachers, coupled with the diligence of our students, Corbin High School achieved tremendous success. For the second year in a row, we were awarded the highest honor by the state by being a “School of Distinction.” Moreover, I am very proud that out of 229 Kentucky high schools, CHS once again led the Commonwealth in the category of College and Career Readiness with a maximum score of 100.”
All Corbin Schools, Corbin High, Corbin Middle, Corbin Intermediate, and Corbin Elementary were classified as Distinguished Schools, scoring in the 90th percentile or above. Corbin High, Corbin Intermediate, and Corbin Elementary were listed as progressing schools and Corbin Elementary School was listed as a high performing school due to their significant improvement. Each Corbin School was able to maintain or increase their scores from last year. Corbin Elementary showed the most improvement with a 9.9 gain over the previous year.
“We’re excited to see the gains we’ve made,” Corbin Elementary Principal Chris Webb Said. “Our teachers work extremely hard and it’s nice to get to see how everyone’s hard work and dedication has paid off.”
Corbin Intermediate School also showed a large gain increasing by 7.7, Corbin High School increased by 0.8, and Corbin Middle School remained a Distinguished School. Corbin Middle School Principal Cynthia Davis commented on the hard work and dedication it takes to continuously achieve high test scores.
“As always, we are pleased with the hard work, dedication, and achievement of our students at Corbin Middle School. Today we will celebrate the gains made with achievement scores in all areas. While tomorrow, we will continue to strive toward our new expectations as we prepare for our new year.” Davis said.
The district and school classifications are based on state required assessments. The Corbin Independent School District is very pleased with this years test results and would like to thank all staff, students, parents, and the community for their continued support of Corbin Schools.
“We are very pleased with the results of the most recent state assessment and give credit to our students and staff. I see every day how hard these folks work and it is rewarding to see their efforts recognized. I am particularly satisfied because I know that while our test scores are exemplary, I know too that our students are receiving an education that is much more than can be measured by a paper and pencil assessment. We offer activities, extra-curricular events, projects, and other learning opportunities that provide our students with a well-rounded educational experience that will prepare them for their future. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our community for always supporting our school district and going the extra mile to help us with the most important work a society can do.” Superintendent David Cox said.
