John Ross, managing editor of the Times Tribune, spoke to more than sixty Corbin High School students from Mr. Theodore’s English 095 and Creative Writing classes.
Mr. Ross imparted advice on writing an editorial as well as some insight into journalism and being an editor.
In the upcoming weeks, the students will be submitting their own editorials. Mr. Ross communicated that when writing an editorial, it is important not only to acknowledge a problem, but also present a solution. He went on to give several examples and presented the students with actual editorials that had been published.
Mr. Ross also explained the importance of good journalism and how sometimes it is the voice for people that cannot be certain places or at certain events. As such, he pointed out, it is best not to be bias. He explained, “A reporter is nothing more than a human tape recorder.”
His presence also provided opportunity for students going into media production or journalism to ask questions. Overall, it was a unique opportunity and experience for the students.
He ended the presentation by explaining his love and passion for journalism, and how it began at an early age and never dissipated. His fervor was indeed demonstrated to a courteous and appreciative group of students.
