Corbin Intermediate School sixth grade students raised $1,858.00 for local charities as part of their Pay It Forward project.
The students raised the money by hosting a craft fair in December. The crafts sold at the fair were made by students out of 100% recycled materials. As part of the project, each student group researched charities and chose one to donate their profits.
Charities the student groups chose were, the Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter, American Red Cross, Everlasting Arms Homeless Shelter, Appalachian Wildlife Foundation, St. Jude, Grace on the Hill Food Pantry, Disabled America Veterans, Wounded Warriors, Christian Appalachian Project, Central Baptist Manger Ministry, American Cancer Society, Corbin Public Library, Habitat for Humanity, and the Ronald McDonald House. The students presented a check with the amount their group raised to a representative from each charity. The students also had the opportunity to speak to the representatives to learn more about the charity they chose.
Corbin Intermediate School plans to turn the project into an annual event. The teachers stated the project encompassed many real world scenarios and helped students learn creativity, the importance of charities and recycling, and basic business principals.
