Corbin High School graduating seniors MaKayla Beecham and Katie Bernardo attended the Professional Education Preparation Program, PEPP Scholars, at the University of Kentucky this summer.
The month long summer program is a highly competitive and very strenuous academic residential program at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center. The program helps prepare students for the admissions process
for medical or dental school, as well as a successful career in undergrad. Beecham and Bernardo were among 35 incoming college students selected for the program. Students are selected based on record of academic excellence, outstanding standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, and a personal statement of “Why I want to be a Physician or Dentist?”

At the event, Beecham and Bernardo attended seminars, learned about the many areas of healthcare, and participated in rotations at the UK Medical Center. They were able to receive dental experience by learning how to drill and fill on teeth, take impressions, and participated in shadowing activities in the Urgent Care Clinic and Oral Surgery departments. They also participated in many community outreach experiences, such as working with special needs camps, hosting parties for patients, and working with elementary schools.
