Corbin Area Technology Center welding students donated a 9/11 Memorial they created to the Corbin City Fire Department.
The welding students created a replica of the cross from Ground Zero in memory of September 11. They donated the project to the Corbin City Fire Department to recognize the firemen who lost their lives on 9/11/01.
The words on the memorial state “9/11/01” and “Never Forgotten 343”. 343 is the number of firemen who lost their lives in the tragic event.
“I wanted to do something with my students to help make them aware of the events of that tragic day, and I wanted them to do something that was above and beyond themselves,” Corbin ATC Welding Instructor Josh Kingrey said. “After creating it, the students and I decided to donate the piece to the city of Corbin to be put on display so that the people may remember what was lost. So that we may never forget.”
Through creating the project the students got the opportunity to learn the significance of the events on 9/11 as well as the impact it had on our nation. Multiple students worked on the project throughout the day on September 11. It was displayed that night at the Corbin High School Football gave versus Danville.
“We were very pleased and honored Friday night at the game when many individuals praised the replica of the cross from 9/11. It is a beautiful piece of art that truly embraces American pride and resilience.” Corbin ATC Principal Patty Crawford said.
The Corbin City Fire Department visited the ATC last week to view the memorial and plan a place to display it.
