Corbin School District Ranks 5th in State

The Corbin Independent School District ranked 5th out of 173 Kentucky School Districts according to testing data released by the state on Friday.

The Corbin School District was listed in the 98th percentile in the state and will continue to be recognized as a Distinguished District. A Distinguished District is classified as any school district scoring between the 90th and 99th percentile in the state.
Corbin High School and Corbin Middle School were each named a “School of Distinction”, which is the highest award an individual school can achieve. To be classified as a School of Distinction, a school must score between the 95th and 99th percentile and meet its current year annual measurable objective, student participate rate, graduation rate goal, and have a graduation rate above 60% for the previous two years.

Corbin High School, Corbin Middle School, and Corbin Intermediate School were all classified as Distinguished Schools, scoring in the 90th percentile or above and Corbin Elementary was classified as a Proficient School.

“We are very proud of all Corbin students and staff who work extremely hard and are committed to continuous school and student improvement.” Superintendent Ed McNeel said.

Corbin High School ranked 11th out of 229 high schools in Kentucky. The school improved from the 97th to the 98th percentile this year. Corbin Middle School ranked 9th of all Kentucky Middle Schools and also improved from the 97th to the 98th percentile. Corbin Intermediate School ranked 33rd of all Kentucky Middle Schools.

Corbin Middle School Principal Cindy Davis stated she was proud to be part of the Corbin Middle School family and she felt the improvement and top ten ranking was part of a team effort.

“Everyone in the CMS family values learning and believes hard work and dedication are integral to the educational process. It’s this team effort between students, parents, teachers, and all staff that allows us to enjoy these successes.” Davis said.

Corbin High School principal John Crawford credited the administrators, staff, and students at Corbin High School as well as the Corbin Area Technology Center for their success.

“The credit for CHS success lies in the innate ability of the students and the teachers who engage and challenge them with superior instructional methods,” Crawford said. “The high school also owes credit to the Corbin Area Technology Center. The ATC contributes largely to our success by improving students career readiness scores.”

The Corbin Area Technology Center offers career and technical classes for students. Corbin ATC Principal Patty Crawford commented that the center works closely with the high school to help improve test scores.

“The administrative team at Corbin High School works very closely with our staff discussing ways we can work together to improve college and career readiness and overall test results. Our main focus is to make sure seniors are ready for KOSSA, Workkeys, and industry certification exams.” Patty Crawford said. “We are very proud of Corbin High School ranking 11th in the state and we appreciate being recognized as part of their success.”

Corbin Educational Center and the Corbin School of Innovation test results also reflect on other schools within the Corbin District. These schools test scores are combined with Corbin High School or the assigned school based on student grade level.

The state rankings are based on state required assessments. Overall, the district is very pleased with the results but is already working on individual improvement plans as well as a district improvement plan.
